~REDWORM BASICS~

  • One pound of redworms equals approximately 1,000 worms.

  • Redworms digest half their body weight (1 lb. = 3 1/2 lbs. of food per week).

  • Egg capsules take approximately 3 weeks to hatch.

  • Egg capsules look like tiny lemons.

Baby worm hatching from an egg capsule.

  • Each egg capsule contains on average 3 worms.

  • Redworms have both male and female reproductive organs but still need to mate for fertilization.

  • Redworm bedding consists of shredded newspaper, cardboard, grass clippings, manure, peat moss, and shredded leaves.

  • Redworm foods consist of fruits, vegetables, bread, coffee grounds, tea bags, pasta, manure or purina worm chow--  foods which spoil are a no-no such as milk products, meat, bones, etc..  If you are using animal manure make sure the animals have not been wormed recently as this could harm the  redworms.
